Educating Cubs Through Bugs

On May 19, 2007, the Entomological Foundation and more than 1,000 Cub Scouts participated in the Greater Washington, DC area Cub Scout Jamboree held at Camp William B. Snyder in Virginia. One of the day's events, Cubs and Bugs Galore, offered Cub Scouts ages 7-10 and their leaders the opportunity to discover the exciting world of insects. With the help of the Foundation's Counselors Dennis Kopp, USDA CSREES, and Rick Meyer, USDA CSREES PAS, Cub Scouts learned about insects, received fun materials to take home, and much more.

Many thanks to Dennis Kopp and Rick Meyer for their on-site participation in the event. Special thanks to Bayer Environmental Science; Ricardo Bessin, University of Kentucky; Ashleigh Morton, Purdue University; and M.O. Way, Texas A&M University for providing the Foundation with the educational materials distributed to all the Cub Scouts and their leaders during the event.

Recipient Highlights

Thank you to our funding partners who make our outreach program possible. Without your support, we would not be able to provide free educational materials to educators to assist in teaching children about science through insects. Below are excerpts from a few of the letters received by the Foundation from educators thanking us for providing this outreach opportunity:

Bug Day was great!! I had a May Beetle for the kids to hold. Almost none of them wanted to hold it until I gave stickers to the ones who did. All of a sudden almost everyone wanted to hold it. Behold- the power of stickers!! They loved the bookmarks- thanks for sending them. I have already used the teachers guide book twice. The students are from the ABC Pre School. Again, thanks so much for all your help...

I wanted to let you know I received the Foundation's materials in the mail. They are wonderful! The students were extremely excited to look at the butterfly display. We talked abou tthe bilateral symmetry in their wings and created our own butterflies. The posters are a wonderul addition to my room. And, the lesson book is great.... Thank you for sending the Insect Appreciation Digest and insect stickers. I imagined the Digest would be just a short introductory pamphlet on entomology, but was delighted to discover it is a comprehensive resource packed with useful and fascinating information! I know it will be a great reference for me as I prepare my educational talks on butterflies and other insects. I appreciate the Foundation making this kind of quality information available so we can teach kids and adults alike about the wonders of the insect world. Keep up the good work!.... J.B. McKoy, CO

I am done teaching my Insect Week to my first graders and it was awesome! The kids loved the bookmarks. I talked quite a bit about various types of insects and got a chance to use the posters you sent. When I taught the lesson on metamorphosis (complete), the kids took a quiz, did a coloring project, and loved the butterfly fans they received! All in all, I have to send a huge thank-you to the Foundation's donors for the great lesson book and all of the other items they sent to me. It made the week of my teaching science a huge and smashing success!... First Grade Teacher, Finger Lake Elementary, AK
