Award:

The International Congress on Insect Neurochemistry and Neurophysiology (ICINN) Student Recognition Award in Insect Physiology, Biochemistry, Toxicology, and Molecular Biology

The award shall be made on the basis of recognizing and encouraging innovative research in the areas of insect physiology, biochemistry, and toxicology in the broad sense. The areas of research may include: development, genetics, defense mechanisms, and other offshoots of physiology, biochemistry, and toxicology. The award consists of  an amount that varies depending upon the interest earned from the endowment and a certificate of recognition. The awardee will be presented with the award at the Entomological Society of America's (ESA) annual meeting.

Eligibility

Applicant must be a student and an active, current ESA member. He/she must have demonstrated excellence to the advancement of basic or applied entomological research on the undergraduate or graduate level. An individual may receive this award only once.

Nomination Process

Applications/nominations must be submitted electronically. Please click here for details on electronic submission requirements. Nominations may be made by an ESA branch or section; or by any individual ESA member. A nominee need not be a member of section B, but the research forming the basis of the nomination must fall within the broad range of section B research.

Award Procedures

Nominations must include the following information:

1) A brief summary, no longer than four pages double-spaced, on the student's research to include questions, rationale, methods, results and specific end-user benefits.
2) A one-page statement of student's short-term and long-term career goals.
3) A copy of the student's transcripts.
4) Letter of nomination to include the following information concerning the student's :

  a) technical knowledge and research ability,
  b) ability to solve problems through teamwork and/or through
      the use of unique solutions, research design, or techniques,
  c) ability to work effectively with entomologists and non-entomologists;
  d) ability to effectively communicate, either in writing or verbally,
      to a wide range of audiences, including peers,
      non-entomologists and the general public; and
  e) leadership among peers in both technical influence and
      outreach within the profession of entomology.

Deadline

Application/nomination packages must be received by the Entomological Foundation Headquarters by July 1.

Renomination

Any candidate nominated, but not selected, may be renominated no more than two times within the two-year period after his/her initial submission. Application/nomination packages will be retained for two years by the Entomological Foundation Headquarters. Nominators must send a letter of renomination to melodie@entfdn.org by the award deadline above. Previously submitted documentation will be used for the evaluation process unless the nominator submits new or updated documents. The renomination e-mail must contain this additional documentation. New or updated documents must follow the electronic submission requirements.

Notification

The Entomological Foundation Headquarters will notify all candidates and their nominators, where applicable, with the results of their application.
