Deadline
Application/nomination packages must be received by the Entomological Foundation Headquarters by July 1.

Notification
The Entomological Foundation Headquarters will notify all candidates and their nominators, where applicable, with the results of their application.

Renomination
Any candidate nominated, but not selected, may be renominated no more than two times within the two-year period after his/her initial submission. Application/nomination packages will be retained for two years by the Entomological Foundation Headquarters. Nominators must send a letter of renomination to melodie@entfdn.org by the award deadline above. Previously submitted documentation will be used for the evaluation process unless the nominator submits new or updated documents. The renomination e-mail must contain this additional documentation. New or updated documents must follow the electronic submission requirements.

Award for Excellence in Integrated Pest Management

  The award shall be made on the basis of  outstanding contributions which have a direct relation to integrated pest management.  Special consideration shall be given to independence of thought and originality. Previous recipients of this award are not eligible for future nominations.  The award consists of  an amount that varies depending upon the interest earned from the endowment and an inscribed plaque. The awardee will be presented with the award at the Entomological Society of America's (ESA) annual meeting.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of entomology, The Entomological Foundation supports five recognition awards programs.

Eligibility

A nominee must be an Entomological Society of America (ESA) member  and must have made outstanding contributions to integrated management.  A recipient of a widely recognized scientific award will not be eligible for this award unless the accomplishment cited as the basis for nomination represents new work. Previous recipients of the Integrated Pest Management Award are not eligible for future nominations.

Nomination Process

Application/nominations must be submitted electronically. Please click here for details on electronic submission requirements.  Each ESA branch is to submit one nominee to the Entomological Foundation each year. One nominee per Branch that Rolls-up to National.  The nominees selected, should be selected on a merit basis from a review of recently published work. Individual nominations may be made by any Entomological Society of America member, but nominations through a branch are encouraged.

Award Procedures

Applications/nominations must be accompanied by supporting data, arranged in the following format:

1) Letter of Nomination.
2) Summary of research accomplishments.
3) Background information and research. Click here for guidelines for developing award CV. Complete sections 1, 2 & 5 only.
4) Letter of recommendation (maximum three).

Five of the most relevant reprints of each candidate's paper must accompany the nomination. These papers should be those that were published during the last three to four years and which are related to the research being considered. These are essential if the candidates are to be evaluated on research quality, originality, interpretation, presentation, and impact of the results. A bibliography of these and additional articles on which the research is based should be furnished. Only published research will be accepted by the Awards Committee.

Integrated Pest Management Team

  Dow AgroSciences Integrated Pest Management Team Award presented by the Entomological Foundation, recognizes a small collaborative team effort involving industry and academic scientists that result in successful integrated pest management approach to control a pest problem in any aspect of agriculture. The award (inscribed statue), will be presented at the Entomological Society of America's annual meeting.

Eligibility

The team recognized must include one entomologist from the private sector and one from the public sector. The focus of the award is teamwork and project success.

Applications/nominations must be accompanied by supporting data, arranged in the following format:

1) A brief 6-8 page typewritten summary of the integrated pest management project and the impact of the project's success.
2) A letter of nomination.

The Larry Larson Graduate Student Award for Leadership in Applied Entomology

  This Fund recognizes Dr. Larry Larson's role as a leader and pioneer in insect management and carries that leadership legacy to our next generation of leaders in applied entomology. Gifts in honor and memory of Dr. Larry Larson are a tribute to his tireless and lasting contributions to the science and practice of entomology. Dr. Larson served with Dow AgroSciences in a number of roles within Discovery and Field Research and Development for over 28 years. He was highly recognized, both inside and outside of the company, for his passion for science and for his outreach to the scientific and local communities including his commitment to young people. His contributions included serving as President of the Entomological Society of America, Board of Directors and Counselor for the Entomological Foundation, and helping Dow AgroSciences introduce new methods for pest management that won Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards, given by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The Award consists of  an amount that varies depending upon the interest earned from the endowment and a trip to Dow AgroScience's Corporate Headquarters in Indianapolis, tour of facilities, opportunity to meet key Dow AgroSciences personnel (student will be asked to give a seminar covering research) and  receive a small gift commemorating the occasion.

Eligibility

Applicant must be an ESA member.
Final year Master's students or first year Ph.D. students are eligible. Student should have demonstrated and documented capability in the areas of technical knowledge, communication, creativity, and leadership. Technical knowledge should be demonstrated via academic achievements and research ability. Communication demonstrated as effectiveness in written and oral formats to a wide range of audiences including peers, non-entomologists, and the general public (e.g. professional presentations, local society presentations, inter-and-intra-departmental presentations, etc.). Creativity in the design, execution, and application of research, teaching, and/or extension. Leadership among peers in both technical influence and outreach within the profession of entomology, including participation within his or her university. Student should have demonstrated ability to work effectively with entomologists and non-entomologists (e.g., interdisciplinary projects, cross-discipline committees, etc.). Student should be able to demonstrate a broad interest in entomology and science (outreach programs, involvement in campus science programs, involvement in other programs besides student's research). Student should have demonstrated ability to solve problems through cooperation and/or through applications of unique solutions, research designs, or techniques.

5) Student  research should address an applied entomological question.

Snodgrass Memorial Research Award

Eligibility

Candidates must have completed a graduate research thesis or dissertation in either arthropod morphology, systematics, taxonomy, or evolution at a recognized college or university within two calendar years previous to the due date of his/her application. The applicant must be a member of the Entomological Society of America (ESA). On request, an application may remain active for two years, if otherwise eligible and requested by the student. This award consists of a certificate and a cash award, the amount based on the earnings from the investment.

Thomas Say Award

Eligibility

The award is given for significant and outstanding work in the fields of insect systematics, morphology, or evolution. "Insect" is defined here to include insect allies. The recipient's work must have been published. The work must be either by a North American or focus on  New World insects and allies. Nominations may be submitted by any person. This award consists of a certificate and a cash award based on earnings from the investment.

1) Letter of nomination.
2) Copy of the Table of Contents or title pages along with a selection of text pages.

4) Two published reviews (not to exceed a total of 4 pages) based on the works submitted under number 2.
5) Maximum of two letters of recommendation.
