The Entomological Foundation's 2004 Awards:

Plant Resistance to Insects Graduate Student Research Award

Established by an endowment from donations by Kenneth J. and Barbara Starks and additional funding partners, this grant encourages research by graduate students in the field of plant resistance to insects in entomology or plant breeding/genetics. The annual grant consists of a plaque and a research grant dependent on the interest earned from the endowment; this year the amount is $500.

Casey Delphia is a Ph.D. Student in Entomology at The Pennsylvania State University. Her B.S. degree was received from the University of Massachusetts in Environmental Science. Her research explores the effects of compounds in the saliva of Heliothis virescens (tobacco budworm) on volatile production by tobacco plants and the response of the specialist parasitoid Cardiochiles nigriceps to the volatiles induced by these compounds. The goal of her research is to provide insights into the regulation of plant biochemical pathways and the mechanisms underlying tritophic interactions.
